Homemade Play Dough

Play dough is one of the quintessential things in childhood. I don't know a single kid that doesn't love play dough now and then.

For the longest time, I avoided making homemade play dough because I hated having to clean up the caked on remnants left in the pot after "cooking" it on the stove. It wasn't until a friend passed along this easy recipe some time ago that mounds (literally) of homemade play dough graced its' way into the chubby hands of the little fellas.

Easy Homemade Play Dough

3 c flour
3 c boiling water
1/2 c salt
6 tsp cream of tartar
3 T oil (I used vegetable oil)
food colouring

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil
2. Add the boiling water and food colouring then mix thoroughly
3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it until it is no longer sticky (be careful not to add too much flour though, or the dough will dry out)

Tidbits:
  • store play dough in Ziplock freezer bags or in an air tight containers
  • if, after time, it starts to get slightly sticky, knead in a tiny bit of flour
  • will keep for several months
  • contains no "store/chemical" preservatives like in the store bought kind which makes it a healthy alternative for little hands (and mouths if you have a fella that likes to put things in his mouth like I do - oh, when will that faze end?)
